Fire Emblem, Sepiran & Sanaki, he had to mix lessons she liked (such as dancing) with lessons she hated or she'd sulk all day

....................................................................................

"Repeat the last line," Sephiran said, looking over his script at the empress. "If you don't enunciate, that quote will sound like gibberish, and your audience will think their empress has a speech impediment."

Sanaki glared and slapped her script to her thigh. "If you can find anyone in Sienne fluent enough in the old tongue to tell, I'll double your monthly stipend and let you have a vacation." She sighed sharply when he opened his mouth and waved her hand at him. "It had already fallen out of use among beorc by Altina's time - even I know that. Why would she memorize heron poetry? It's just a play."

Rain dripped from the eaves outside, scattering and streaking the flat stones on the other side of the glass doors. Earlier it was sleet, and the ballroom had been darker, despite the candelabra standing in their corner, a triangle of golden spots of light. Sanaki stood between two of them, almost twenty steps away, and when she looked over her shoulder at the doors a flash of lightning illuminated the sky, the courtyard and its roses, and cast a sharpness upon her face so it seemed his empress was painted in black and white except for her blood red robe.

If she were only a little taller, and her hair twice as long--

The light faded. Sephiran lowered his script. "You'd be surprised." Typeset in bold in a line at the top of each page was the cliche The Transience of Love, and he couldn't decide if the title was appropriate or not, given the scene it depicted. "It is fact that Altina and Lehran were acquaintances, at the very least, so this depiction is correct. He would be fluent in poetics and ancient tongues, though--" he looked at the window, watched for lightning. "I do not think he would have been any help in her bid for a husband."

The sky remained dark. In his peripheral vision, Sanaki tilted her head, the angle just right for her to be rolling her eyes to the ceiling, though her expression didn't reveal exasperation when he looked - just a line between her brows. "Oh? It was so long ago, though. For all we know, she was in love with Lehran, not this other person-- just think, she could be using this as an excuse to tell him how she feels, and when he corrects her here..." She lifted her script. "I... suppose that would make him look quite dense, wouldn't it."

Sephiran tried not to frown, though he felt his lips pull, knew he was pressing them together. If she only knew what she was saying-- but, knowing his empress, she would have the nerve to say it anyway. That must be the influence of the other senators; he never encouraged such graceless statements of opinion. "If you fancy that idea, keep it in mind when you deliver your lines." He took a few steps back - five, six, seven, past the candelabra - and said, "Try to soften your tone, but remember your voice has to carry--"

"Are you serious?" Sanaki planted her fists on her hips, the script crumpled in one hand. "'Speak softly, but loudly' - I thought we were studying drama, not a paradox!"

He let himself smile. "You manage during audience well enough. For instance, two afternoons ago when you whispered your opinion of Oliver's new robe a little too loudly--"

Sanaki's face colored. She lifted her script, held it before her face like a fan. "Hurry up and start already."

Thunder rolled over the city like a drum roll, muffled by the windows - and yet to his ears, the sound was deafening. "Be not discouraged, queen of heroes, for thy love is a blessing much desired, and your paramour knows thy worth as I do..."
