Game: Fire Emblem 9: Path of Radiance
Characters: Marcia, Elincia
Prompt: May 1 - For my heart is a child
Words: 487
Notes: let's see; this is my first time writing Marcia. It's prep for a real fic, assuming I can figure her out and get her voice down. She's one of those characters I've always liked, but never got around to writing for some reason or other. So, you know, this isn't a complete story or anything, just a snip.

"Are you okay, Marcia...?"
She kneeled on the floor of the hold, a top from Mist's shoebox of belongings - old toys, letters, broken bead necklaces - between Marcia's fingers. It went spinning toward the princess, skipping over the planks in a blur of red and white before wobbling and making a wide return arc to Marcia. She sat down cross-legged between two crates, let it bump against her boot and clatter onto its side to show a glyph: fortune.
Ha.
"Yeah, I'm okay." Marcia picked it up again, turned it over in her hands. Glyphs curled on the eight sides: peace, prosperity, hope and success, yadda yadda. White on red, red on white; she wondered why it didn't look pink while it spun. "I used to have five of these. The temples give them away on holidays in Begnion. Is it the same in Crimea?"
Elincia dusted her hands off and bent down for the top of her crate. The corner popped up when she tried to push it closed, and the princess sighed. "I've repacked this three times already." She dropped onto the box behind her in a poof of orange skirt. "Our temples didn't give them away, but I had one at-- at home."
Way to go, Marcia thought-- make her think of home. Great. "Um." Elincia stared at the top of her crate, a frown making her lips twitch slightly down, and Marcia said the first thing that came to mind: "Well, then I guess it'd be fairer to gamble with them in Crimea, wouldn't it? You wouldn't believe the games you can play with these things - my brother made thirty gold with a top, once, by conning pilgrims into contests, but of course the tables were always rigged..." She scratched her ear when the princess looked at her, blinking slowly with her brows slightly drawn, and rolled her eyes up to the dark beams of the ceiling and the lamp that swayed slightly with the movement of their ship. "Yeah, I know."
"No, no, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to look--" Elincia paused, as if searching for the right word. "I thought..." Another pause. "Isn't admission to the Holy Guard restricted to the aristocracy?"
That was an awfully nice way to phrase the question. Marcia leaned back on her hands, the top still held captive by its handle between two fingers. "Yeah. We're the only ones who can afford to gamble, see. But Makalov and me, well--" He was probably in trouble somewhere; she just hoped that trouble didn't involve a knife in the back, or a smile cut from ear to ear. "-- not so much, anymore."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be." Marcia rolled her head, cracked her neck. "It's his own stupid fault."

Gah, I feel so awkward writing these characters. There's no way this is going to happen before the 27th.
