Disclaimer: Fire Emblem is copyrighted by Intelligent Systems and Nintendo. I'm not getting any money out of this, just satisfaction~

Notes: the goal was to make it drabble-ish, so under 500 words. It's more angsty than my usual, and also probably not very new, but I'm two themes away from finishing this challenge - I have something in progress that can be used for dash, but this theme kept eluding me.

This follows the default end to Radiant Dawn.

...................................................................

Sanaki remembers him whenever someone kneels to kiss her signet ring: the men because of the shape of their hands, the calluses on their fingertips, the impression that they are bigger, stronger than her own. The women remind her with long sweeps of their dark hair when they bend their heads with reverence, so it parts on either side to show the pale napes of their necks; then the way they use both hands to support hers, never just one. Beside her throne, where Sephiran's upright figure once waited whenever she snuck glances in his direction during court, the space is blank and empty.

Not many are qualified to fill his position. A lord of House Damiell has the experience, but not the pedigree; the assistant Sephiran chose to help him run the provincial government at Persis is suspected of aiding and abetting his treason; the head of House Leandros has the lineage, education, and sits next in line for the seat of Asmin, yet Sanaki cannot bring herself to open the doors to Sephiran's office to her or invite the woman to replace his signature with hers. She imagines sitting behind her desk, and Leandros standing before it with her hands clasped before her obediently, and feels a shiver seize something deep in her chest when she pictures speaking, acting the way she used to - giving orders, demanding reports, revealing her worries.

The space remains empty - before her desk, beside her throne. Sanaki looks at the window casting its shape upon the dark red carpet of the audience chamber - it is still the largest construction of glass and silver on Tellius. Through the red and blue shapes, the pink, yellow, green, she sees the outline of the Tower of Guidance like a spearhead threatening the sky.

She remembers the slate and blue stone in that place, the lamps and torches burning aquamarine, the snaking pattern of his hair and blood on the dark blue tiles, painting the end of his life. A long life, she realizes now - an eternity of deep blue despair. Weakness digs its nails into her chest and casts a mist across her vision, prickles her eyes.

Sanaki decides will forgive him for everything - his betrayal, his love, his apology - when she forgets that color, and the hollowness that settled in her chest when his lashes lowered for the last time. It stole the warmth from his lips and his body; it made her fingers freeze around the jewel he gave her, which hangs now beneath her clothes, dangling warm between her breasts and making a slight indentation through the fabric. She'll forgive him for dying when that warmth comes back to her in the shape of his smiling face and not one minute before.
