Suikoden III-ish: Plans for the Future

"It took at least three days," Vincent said, stirring two spoons of sugar into his tea. "Still no results."
Albert took his bitter, holding the cup between his palms to warm them. The first harvest was most fragrant; he looked forward to this time of year to breathe in the scent of fresh, unroasted leaves. "How do they stay employed? The politics are well and good, but performance matters on the field. What do they deliver?"
His companion shrugged. "Gold? Or blackmail. Corel isn't as careful as Gabriev when it comes to his, ah, indiscretions."
"Typical." He sipped, wincing when his tongue was scalded. "And you--"
"Found a patron," Vincent interrupted. "And one determined not to take advantage of my skills. I won't argue." He tipped cream into his tea and grinned at Albert's expression, finger still hooked around the creamer handle. "You?"
Albert eyed the cream, lips pursing. "I have other plans."
"World domination?"
"Impractical."
"Marriage alliance?"
"I hope not." He sipped again, the temperature more to his liking. "Toran encourages early alliance, but I imagine it would be a liability."
Vincent peered into his tea, smile fading. "Hilda can best Gabriev on the field blindfolded." He shrugged again and his eyes cut up to search Albert's. "Find the right one and she'll be an asset - or her land will be. You rate a good match here, with your family's reputation."
Albert's answering stare was flat excepting the lofted eyebrow. Blandly, "You're suggesting I marry."
"Oh, no." His friend downed the rest of his tea and left the mug on its saucer. "I'm suggesting you find a bishop - if that doesn't amount to the same thing. Miss Mercade looks promising."
He didn't know whether to laugh or sigh.

Vincent = an old SPPM character before the game went kaput. I still rather like him, and he seems a good candidate for Albert's circle of friends - and, he has to have at least a small one.
I kept breaking into present tense. Usually the problem is the other way around. What the hell.
