...............................................

Morning came too soon for Yuri. A soft knock woke her, and she blinked stickiness from her eyes while someone on the other side of the curtain opened the chest storing her clothes to lay something out. They left her alone for the most part once she made it clear their service was unwanted, but insisted on coming in every morning to prepare her. They seemed to know every time Reishin stayed the night, so Yuri suspected they were hoping for something to talk about.

"Wake up," Yuri whispered when the door closed behind her maid. Sunlight peeked into their alcove from beneath the curtain. She nudged Reishin with her shoulder and twisted one of her legs free. Nothing. He sighed and shifted, pressing her into the mattress. The arm over her waist didn't budge.

So it's going to be that way. Yuri kicked his shin. His leg clamped over her ankle, trapping her. She sighed. If it were any other day she'd let him get away with it, but there was a hungry child waiting for her in the kitchen about now, and she'd promised. So she inched her fingers over the curtain, grabbed the edge, and pulled.

Light flooded in. Reishin cursed and pressed his face into her neck. "You're a horrible woman."

"Don't you--" Yuri yawned, squeezing her eyes shut. "Don't you have a job to get on with?"

"Probably."

Her skin prickled. "I don't know how you got through the orientation period without being fired." She twisted her arm over the edge of the bed to reach her robe, but her fingers were just shy of the floor. "Get up, or Kouyuu will start wondering why I'm late."

Reishin lifted his head. "Late for what?"

"I told him I would make breakfast when he got well. He gets up so early--"

"We have servants for that." He levered himself up and grabbed her wrist. Dark hair slithered over his shoulders to tickle her ribs and curl over her breasts, soft as silk. "Kouyuu can wait."

Heat rushed to Yuri's face. Being married to him was similar to being his retainer most of the time, though she couldn't follow him to court now that she'd shed the 'Yuzuriha' persona for good. She took care of the same household matters, and now that Kouyuu was theirs, she spent time studying with him or walking in the gardens - really, she couldn't leave him alone in the house with his abysmal sense of direction.

She spent most of her childhood pretending she was a boy. She wasn't brought up for this role, as most girls were. It wasn't a difficult concept, to spread one's legs, but this was Reishin. Reishin, the stupid, annoying boy she'd been told to keep out of trouble. The one she bribed with tangerines to get him to study, who used to drool on his pillow every night, the one who made her life miserable for an entire winter by telling Kurou wild ghost stories that had him screaming and running to her bed every night.

"You--" She licked dry lips. "You're insufferable."

"That's right." His mouth curved into a smile. "And I always get what I want."

....................................................

This isn't what I was going to submit for the prompt originally. The first idea got to long - it's at 5200 words give or take, and still going - and my second choice got too complicated. The good news, I guess, is that there are two more where this came from, and they're much heavier on plot. :P
