What did she say? Senka asked. Before that. Before she...
She said, 'That fool won't survive without someone holding his hand. Take care of him.'
Take care of him. He repeated it to himself sometimes, watching a candle flicker in a draft, listening to her successor make his reports. He thought about it in the council chamber while the Department of Ceremonies argued with Finance over the figures projected for the New Year Festival. He remembered it when he contemplated the view of cherry blossoms from the windowsill in his pavilion, and heard a dry echo of her voice in the whisper of petals ruffled in the wind.
Why do you keep asking me to marry you? she said once. You know I won't change my mind.
Even rejection, when delivered in her voice, was worth remembering for every nuance.
Senka knew he was a sentimental fool; blood ran in rivers at his bidding, the clans were on their knees, and he endured every meeting and obligatory marriage with the assurance he would listen to her at the end of the day. Once she was gone he couldn't sleep, couldn't see the road he walked any longer.
That, he told Ryuuki, though his son didn't know the story, is why I'm dying.
I can't find my way when she isn't here to hold my hand.
