[Fire Emblem] Light of Dawn
Jun. 29th, 2008 10:52 amLight of Dawn
By: Amber Michelle
Fandom: Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Characters: Sephiran, Sanaki
Words: 400
Notes: this wouldn't leave me alone until I wrote it, but it's one of those fics I can't feel really happy about because I can't shake the feeling there's still information I need. :P It's going to take me awhile to finish Radiant Dawn again and get Lehran and his associated scenes, but I heart him so much that I can't stop writing about him anyway. ;_;
This ended up with 400 words completely by accident. If I edit, will I jinx it?
.................................................
The sky was pale gray in the east, and Lehran watched from the branches of a cliff-bound cypress as the mountains were gilded and then gave way to a yellow sliver of sun. The arms of the tree stretched out flat and wide, like a platform or a veranda, and from the edge he saw the rocky beach cliffs smooth into hills, into plains, and back to water again before distance veiled what lay beyond. He was a child when he watched dawn light up the world; his bones were thin and brittle compared to the tree he stood on. His wings were no stronger than the blades of leaves.
He balanced on the branch until his feet met empty air and spread his wings. He buoyed, caught the updraft, and was flying.
.
"The water receded," a voice said. "But where is she?"
The temple was in ruins around them. The buttresses had crumbled under the weight of water on one side, and the wall with them. Mud and clay sloped in through the chapel, out the doors and into the courtyard. The altar was rubble, but the tree remained, wide as a building and impervious. The Zunanma had loved this tree, and so Ashunera loved it too, once.
Lehran's hand pointed. "The tree," he said, even though he wanted to hesitate. He knew what was next.
"Sing, Lehran." A new voice. "Wake her up."
He knew her voice. It felt as if his throat tightened, but then his mouth opened and his voice spilled forth unobstructed, with the resonance of magic.
.
"Sephiran."
Morning's light bled through the sheer drapery of his office. He turned toward Sanaki's voice and had to blink several times before her image made sense to him. She was seated in her chair at his left, fingernails tapping the arm.
"Empress." His throat was dry. "I apologize. Will you repeat what you just said?"
Her brows furrowed. "You really weren't paying attention at all, were you?"
Sephiran turned back to his papers. Harvest statistics from southern Asmin, transport levies, complaints about the poll tax. He lifted an eyebrow, met her gaze. "Lord Yasmin--"
"--left two minutes ago in a huff."
Yasmin rarely left any meeting satisfied; Sephiran didn't see a problem. "And?"
Sanaki's frown deepened. "What's wrong with you?"
Everything. Sephiran smiled. "Nothing is wrong, Empress. I didn't sleep last night. My apologies for the inconvenience."
