Sephiran studied the empty sky. The blue was diluted with haze, almost white, and shimmering. No suitable specimens presented themselves, unless one counted the seagulls shrieking and fighting amongst themselves for Sanaki's crust of bread on the patio - which he didn't.
"Sephiran."
He looked down at his charge. "Your majesty?"
His six-year-old empress frowned, lower lip puffing out. "Why are you making me learn about birds?"
He checked his sigh. Sanaki was a good student for her age, but now that she had grown accustomed to her station, she refused to let anything pass without a question. Why do I have to write this way? Why can't I use the back stairs? Why won't you let me outside? She hadn't questioned her course work yet, but it was only a matter of time. "This is on the curriculum established for children of the nobility."
Sanaki's frown deepened. It would be a formidable expression in ten years or so. "That doesn't mean anything."
He turned her by the shoulders to look at the seagulls. "Tell me. What do you notice about their behavior?"
Her bread crust was in pieces scattered over the limestone tiles. There were half a dozen birds when they walked out onto the grass and now there were only three, the smallest being driven off by a gull missing two toes as they watched. It brought the senate to mind. Sephiran compressed his lips and waited.
"They're greedy." Sanaki looked up at him, turning her attention back to the birds only when prompted. "They don't look hungry."
"How would you tell them apart?"
Her face scrunched up. "That one has gray tail feathers..."
"A common feature," he said. "Seagulls often have gray feathers on their wings, too. What else?"
"I don't-- oh!" She pointed. "Look, that one, on the wall--!"
Sephiran looked, straightened. The bird stared back with one obsidian eye, then spread a wing and leaned down to preen his feathers.
She pulled at his arm. "That's a raven! Am I right? I've never seen one that size." He captured her thin wrist to calm her, and she settled back on her feet. "Can we have the groundskeeper capture it?"
He fought a smile and raised his eyebrows at the bird perched on the garden wall. "Well, Kilvas? Are you in the mood to be captured? Our halls are stocked with fat and easy prey."
The raven launched, gliding smoothly to the grass in front of them and scattering the seagulls. A rusty chuckle vibrated in its throat. They don't run fast enough.
Sanaki's mouth rounded in a little 'o' that she covered with her hands. "You're not a raven."
The wind of his transformation ruffled her hair. "But I am, little empress." Naesala pushed his fingers through his hair, showing far too many teeth with his smile. "A magnificent one, if I do say so myself."
"I am not little," she said, turning her nose up and away.
"As you can see," Sephiran said, tapping her head to make her face front, "she is too intelligent to fall for your ilk, Raven King. Do you have something to report?"
"Wait." Sanaki deigned to look up at Kilvas again and extended her hand. "It's an honor to meet you, King Kilvas." Her recital was stilted, but her gaze was straightforward and she didn't flinch at all when the raven knelt to look her in the eye. "You're the first laguz ruler I've talked to."
Naesala took her hand. "And you are the most charming empress of Begnion I've had the pleasure to meet," he said, bending to kiss her knuckles. She giggled, drawing a more subdued smile from their guest.
Oh, that wouldn't do at all. Sephiran narrowed his eyes. She was only six, and already falling for his charm. He cleared his throat, and the raven king straightened quickly and stepped back. "If you please," he said, steering the empress away with a hand flat on her back, "we should continue this inside."
