Jul. 6th, 2008 11:39 pmParentless
Author: Amber Michelle
Day/Theme: July 6 - Will you ever know?
Series: Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
Character/Pairing: Rafiel, Micaiah
Rating: innocent
Words: 300
Notes: I don't have a save in ch.3, which I regret - I remember everybody evacuating after Kurth arrived, but--? In lieu of information, I skimp on setting.
.............................................
Rafiel held Micaiah through the night after they evacuated the keep, singing to her and stroking silver hair from her face. Her tears dried on the outside but he felt them within, as if her body were a glass vessel, and lightning coiled at the core. Between them was the distant voice that brought them together in the desert, echoing his song.
"It's getting louder," she said. Her voice rasped, dry.
"How do you hear it?" He smoothed her hair down with both hands and urged her to look up at him. "So few beorc seem to respond."
The shade and shape of her eyes looked so familiar, but he couldn't place them. Micaiah blinked and averted her gaze, and the feeling was gone. "I'm not really beorc."
"I know. I wonder if others like you experience the same thing." Rafiel nudged her back to sit on her legs and took her hand. He tucked his wings back with effort. "Show me."
The tent walls shuddered in a sudden gust of wind, and the lamp on the floor beside them flickered. Micaiah pinched the fingers of her glove and pulled it off, letting it slide from her lap. She extended her hand. The mark of a bird spread over her hand like brushwork from knuckle to wrist.
Rafiel traced the fluid shape with his thumb. He knew what it meant, as well as he knew his own wings. "You aren't parentless," he said. Her muscles went limp, her head bowed, and he pulled Micaiah over, gathering her into his arms again. She had to let it out now and be strong for the others in the morning when the time came to take up arms again. "Cry all you want. Whoever they were, I will hold you in their stead."
..............................................
This isn't what I meant to do at all, but I've been trying to work out what the relationship is between Micaiah and Rafiel. Their kinship (if you can call it that?) sort of came out of the blue. I thought it might have been because he recognized her heritage on some level, but I don't know enough about how the Branded thing works, though I searched as thoroughly as I could.

Date: 2008-07-08 05:42 am (UTC)I really like your style for this. It's artistic in a unique and vague way. I'm reminded of like, Sumi-e and Japanese brushwork for some reason.
