"Rafiel--"
"No."
Nailah frowned and tossed another twig into the fire. "But he--"
"Nailah, dear." He pulled her hand into his lap and laced their fingers together. "I washed my hand."
That's not the point, she muttered, but her fingers curled, pressing softly against the back of his hand, between the bones. She could have broken it with a twist of her wrist. Rafiel felt somewhat insubstantial in her grip, as if he were really made of light and feathers and poetry - though if he was, he hoped the goddess would be merciful and allow him a better stanza than what Oliver composed that morning.
Winter had melted away as they marched south into Begnion, but there was no escaping the cold. Whether forest or plain, the nights were frigid and there was only so much warmth between them. Rafiel tugged his hand away and shifted behind her, arms encircling her waist. Her injuries after the battle were minimal, but he didn't like the way the blood-scent lingered even after she was healed. He buried his nose in her hair until he smelled only skin and the musk of fur.
"You know--" Nailah sighed, glancing up at the darkening sky. "That deformed beorc was right about one thing: you are a banquet for the eyes."
He smiled against her neck. "I rather like that, coming from you."
"Hmmmm." She always smiled when she did that. "I'll say it more often if you'll let me kill him."
"I think," he said, resting his chin on the slope of her shoulder, "if you say one more word about Duke Tanas, you will have to sleep alone."
A hitch in her breath, silence. "Well if you're going to be that way about it--"
"I am."
"Ungrateful little bird."
"Yes dear."
