Sanaki thought, at times, her fate must be to lose things. Her favorite fountain pen disappeared into the ether the night before, and the keys to the chest holding Cymbeline were still missing. Her prime minister had yet to return, though she'd made it clear he was expected to, and that he wasn't to take very long about it. She should have been more specific; six years wasn't very long at all for someone who'd lived more than twelve hundred.

When she heard Kilvas would mate with Leanne, she could only sigh. It wasn't completely unexpected. He didn't neglect his regular visits, so she only complained a little.

Sanaki held her wine glass up to the light to admire the red glow and flicked her gaze aside to watch Kilvas over the lip. "Once, I told Lekain I thought you were handsome and I wanted to marry you."

He laughed softly, grim, reclining in his chair. "Did he have a seizure?"

"He nearly choked." She sipped and put her glass down, rolling her eyes. "I'm glad he didn't live to see this. It would have ruined my fun."

"You are angry."

"No." His eyebrows took a skeptical tilt and Sanaki shrugged, looking away. They'd taken to meeting alone when she wanted to converse about matters other than politics, but she'd never quite gotten used to sitting in a room with the raven without Sephiran looking over her shoulder. "I like Leanne."

Kilvas leaned forward, elbows on the table. "I do too."

"Obviously." Sanaki gathered the folds of her skirt and stood. She didn't want him to think this was jealousy - it wasn't. Not really. If she envied Leanne anything, it was his companionship, the assurance of his presence. She had neither, no one worth speaking of. "Will you indulge my curiosity one more time?"

His forehead furrowed. "It's not like we're flying off into the sunset, Empress. It's just a change in status."

She put her hands on her hips. "Yes or no?"

The raven eyed her posture, eyes flicking up, down, before meeting hers again. "Okay, sure."

Sanaki smiled and he leaned back a hair. "Don't worry," she said, rounding the table and approaching his chair. His feathers ruffled - was he afraid of her? - and she straddled his lap, whispering, "It won't hurt, I promise." He grabbed her hips and managed a strangled wait a min-- and then she covered his mouth with hers and traced the seam of his lips with her tongue until they parted obediently.

She only lingered a moment before releasing the kiss; Leanne was her friend, and Sanaki didn't want to take advantage of her kindness or trespass on her territory.

"Where--" Kilvas gasped when she let him go and sat back, "--did you learn that?"

"Do I look like a child to you?" His grip on her hips tightened and her lips thinned in a smile that drew his eyes back to her mouth. That's right. She wouldn't let him walk away thinking her anything less than a grown woman. "I've always wanted to try that at least once. And--" He sucked in a hissing breath when she clamped her legs at his waist and ground against his arousal, "--you aren't complaining, are you."

"Your majesty," he breathed, fingers flexing. Then he gently pushed her away. "Nobody with blood running through their veins would complain."

Sanaki slid from his lap and stepped back, straightening her skirt, then tucking hair behind her ears. "I meant what I said." She smiled, and her lips pursed after a moment. "Perhaps you should visit during the day next time - or bring Leanne. I won't have rumors flying."

Naesala stared at her, standing up when she turned to leave. "Hey." She looked back and watched him tug at an earring, wings pressed tightly against his back. "I'm sorry it didn't work out differently."

"I am too." She inclined her head. "Good night, Kilvas."

This almost grew a plot - if a very generic and unremarkable one. Glad I dodged that bullet!

I so didn't edit.

He'd be a fool not to be afraid of her when she smiles like that. XD
