There were days Shuurei thought time flowed so slowly it was almost still. The carriage bounced and jarred her teeth, and the sun glared past the edge of the curtain at such an angle she couldn't find a spot on her side of the compartment where it wouldn't be in her eyes. Senya reclined on the other bench, wilting in the corner, his robes tangled around his legs.

"Why are you staring at me?" She snapped her book closed and held it up to block the sun. "You bought all of those books to read, didn't you?"

"Li Shun said a woman's face hides a thousand different expressions. But is it true?" He pulled an errant strand of hair from his eyes. "You're a woman. We have time." The corners of his lips turned up.

So he did read - that was nice to know, as she hadn't seen him open a book since he hired her. Shuurei lowered hers. She preferred the sun in her eyes after all. "I doubt a human face is capable of that."

"A reasonable statement." Senya twitched the curtain on his side open a moment. "A goddess, then," he said, and his gaze slid back to her.

It could have been the sun or his gaze, which she supposed a poet would call smoldering. Her face heated, and Shuurei rolled her eyes to the sliver of green she could see outside before the light blinded her. I'm too unschooled to play these games, she quoted silently. And underpaid if he's going to do this every day. Why was she even surprised anymore? She was compared to such every other day.

Aloud, she said, "I'll let you know if I find one."

Quote from 'Your Deceits:'

I'm too unschooled to play these games -
False starts, excuses, lies,
But you are like free - floating river weeds
Chaging with every shift of the Spring wind...
