Rafiel sat on a bed of moss and clover between the roots of an ancient oak and peeled the last kiwi in a slow, careful spiral. His younger siblings had devoured the others after their play in the meadow and stretched between the long grasses at the edge of the shade to nap, leaving him with the sound of songbirds and the drone of insects for company. Leanne's wing twitched, but the rhythm of her sighs spoke of sleep, and her hands were relaxed. A butterfly alighted on Reyson's hair, and he remained still. Some distance away was the strong beat of wings - not heron wings, as the sound was too quiet, so he knew before he heard the heavy landing and saw the dark shape who had come to visit.
"I thought you went to meet someone," Rafiel said, pitching his voice low, biting into the fruit. It was just past ripe, soft and sweet, the tartness lingering on his tongue after he swallowed.
Naesala settled onto the root beside him and folded his wings back. "I did - your father."
He took a smaller bite and narrowed his eyes when the raven followed the motion. "Ashera's judgment must be at hand, for such a strange thing to occur." Naesala reached for his kiwi. Rafiel jerked it out of his range and slapped his hand away. "Why would he want to speak with you?"
"Your father knows how to share," Naesala said, lower lip pouting slightly when he shook his hand out. "I'm hurt, Rafiel. All I wanted was a bite."
Rafiel pursed his lips. "Father called you because--?"
"He's going to send Reyson back to Kilvas with me for a while."
He blinked at Naesala, a bit of sunlight catching his eye through the branches, and then looked at his brother. Leanne's fingers hooked into Reyson's sleeve; between the curls stretched over her face, he saw her eyes were still closed, lashes still fluttering in some dream. Reyson's head was pillowed on her arm. He didn't look nearly old enough to leave the forest, certainly not to visit ravens. He hadn't even grown to his full height yet. Rafiel nibbled on his kiwi and frowned. What nonsense would his brother learn in Kilvas? They'd corrupt him in a matter of weeks.
Naesala's wings snapped open and folded again, drawing his attention back. "It isn't like I'd take him on a raid," he said. "He needs to learn the modern dialect, and he can flap between us and Phoenicis all he wants if it'll make you feel better."
Hmm. The raven's gaze strayed to his fruit again. Rafiel pushed the rest into his mouth and glared.
Naesala grinned. "How selfish." He lunged forward, grabbed Rafiel's wrist. "You shouldn't have let them eat everything if you were just going to pout."
I am not pouting. Rafiel swallowed and tried to pull his hand back. He knew this game, and he wasn't going to fall for it again. "You should have come sooner. The children like you better than I do."
Naesala chuckled. "Oh really." He pulled Rafiel out of his seat by the arm, ignored the rapid flap of his wings. "You don't like me?" His mouth closed around a thumb.
"N-no." Rafiel felt his tongue swirl over the pad of his thumb and stared. I am not going to fall for this, I refuse to fall for this-- "You tell Reyson the most ridiculous things and get him into trouble. You have Leanne fluttering after you like-- like--"
Mmmhmm. Naesala grinned around his thumb, showing teeth, nipped his knuckle and moved to his finger. His eyebrows lifted.
Rafiel didn't pout - he frowned. Again. "Once was enough." Naesala released his finger and Rafiel watched him smile, leaning forward, resting his fingertips on the overconfident curve. He glanced at the sunlit wings of his brother and sister, still entwined, still breathing in an unbroken rhythm. He'd have to wake them soon and move them into the shade before they got sunburned, but--
"I think you're lying," Naesala pulled him onto his knees and dropped his hand, twining his fingers into Rafiel's hair, pulling it back to bare his ear. "You'd be trying harder to get rid of me," he said, and licked the tip, prying his fingers into his robe.
Rafiel grabbed his ponytail. "If they wake up, so help me--"
Naesala bit his lobe and smothered Rafiel's yelp. "They've got to learn some time."
