I've been thinking about Oliver all week, thank you. :P I don't know if I should use this one or try another one, though. I guess I may as well.

"Really," Rafiel said, twisting his fingers together under the table on a beautiful, pink silk napkin he couldn't bear to use. "You don't have to do this, I'm perfectly capable--"
"No no, we can't have you risk those pretty fingers." Oliver waved his protest away and presented his masterpiece - a china plate so delicate the shadow of his fingers were visible through the glass, and peach slices arranged carefully around the centerpiece - a kiwi rose he'd cut himself with a small knife. His fingers were remarkably dexterous for how thick they were.
Rafiel took the plate and tried to smile. Nailah rolled her eyes and leaned against the opposite wall, head lolling back. I'm going to kill him, she mouthed at the ceiling. I'm going to slice his belly open and pick his entrails apart piece by piece. The door stood slightly ajar, and whispers of their companions' movements lingered in the hall. Ike's voice reached him from somewhere to the east. He was discussing tactics with the half-dragon boy. Rafiel hoped he would be awake once they escaped this room; he'd have Nailah throttle the commander out of sleep if he wasn't.
The mansion was too big for their party, and it was cold. The ornate gold decor and fluttering silk curtains did nothing to warm the place, only made it appear metallic and barren. The wind of Hetzel's teleportation spell had lingered on his skin, even hours after it happened. The peach slices were cold when he picked them up. His lips were cold when he ate them.
Oliver took his free hand and Rafiel started. "Duke Tanas--"
"You're freezing. Eat. When you're done I'll give you the warmest room in the house."
Rafiel allowed the duke to rub feeling back into his fingers. Oliver was forever clutching at his hand; it was easier to let him have what he wanted. He'd only continue to try otherwise. "I don't understand why you insist on seeing to my needs personally," Rafiel said. He held his arm stiffly so he wouldn't be tempted to draw away. Nailah's hands twitched against the wall. "You were fighting us three hours ago."
Oliver's hands stilled. Rafiel watched them part, his own pale hand slender between them.
--didn't mean to betray him whispered, a silent confession. If he'd only cooperated.
Rafiel frowned. Was he referring to Hetzel?
Like midnight.
No--
Now perhaps, he will change his mind.
"You remind me of someone," the duke said, and released him.

So, does Oliver deserve a tag? :D

Date: 2008-11-09 06:08 pm (UTC)Mm, I liked this. It took me a few readthroughs to really get it, but he's talking about Lehran here?

Date: 2008-11-10 01:07 am (UTC)Yeah, he's talking about Lehran. Maybe the lines could be made clearer. There's not much opportunity up above, as this is Rafiel's POV, but maybe Oliver's thoughts could be rephrased.
