Shuurei spent most of summer a day shaving ice from the massive block delivered to her yard at sunrise. They brought it down from Ryuuzan, the mountain beyond her mother's grave; only the very top was capped with snow, the rest verdant green. When it arrived she almost sent it back. What was she supposed do with a block of ice the size of a house?
Then one of the children begged to chip pieces off with his knife, and she knew--
Her arms ached, and she wondered how Ryuuki would like an out-of-season snowball in the face - to cool him after work, of course.

One hard-boiled egg made a snack; two or three were a lovely addition to noodle soup with soy and miso broth, sliced to show their white and yellow layers. Shuurei arranged hers in a flower at the center of her bowl, five slices to remind her of cherry blossoms. Father ate his before she could slice them. Seiran didn't like eggs.
It started with a bowl, became a set of three-tiered boxes; then, a wagonload. How did that idiot emperor expect her to eat a thousand hard-boiled eggs?
Was this a comment on her weight?

Shuurei placed the cherry branch on the table by her window where, when the shutters were opened, the sapling stood center, branches leafing light green and yellow, the only color in their garden. Just then it was bathed in moonlight, the color silver and gray.
In two years it would bloom, and Ryuuki said she would too. Her heart still fluttered and beat hard, her throat tight. She reached, touched the branch, a blossom. Of all his gifts - eggs, ice, flowers, the doll - this was the most beautiful.
