Cliches: Akira and Hikaru living together, Akari finding out about their boy love, Akari the yaoi fangirl, May 5th, Hikaru telling Akira about Sai.

First, the fragment. Then I'll explain what I intended to do, and why I didn't finish it.

.................................................

"It's not that hard, Hikaru. If you can become a go pro, you should be able to find a recipe and follow it."

Hikaru glared beneath his bangs, sliding his gaze sideways, but Akari's face was turned up to the cherry blossoms they ducked under when they crossed a street corner that marked the informal line between their neighborhood and the next. He still thought of it that way, couldn't get it out of his head this was where he lived, even when he didn't anymore. "I don't have a cookbook," he said when she came back down to earth.

Akari's school bag clapped against her back, where she held it over her shoulder. "Your mom must have--"

"I'm not asking my mom."

She glanced at him. "Why not?"

Hikaru stalked ahead of her, didn't glance across the street at the wall surrounding the house where he grew up, though he knew she probably did. He smelled curry on the wind ruffling his bangs, steaming fish, and for a minute he thought it was coming from his mom's house, though she didn't have anyone to cook for this time of day anymore. "Give me a break, will you?"

Akari's sigh was sharp. "Fine, but I'm not going in uniform, so you'll just have to wait."

.
.

They caught a bus to Omiya an hour later, after Akari redid her hair (up in a tortoishell claw clip now instead of the two bouncy little pigtails she wore to school) and went through half her closet to find the right outfit (don't you dare come in, I'm almost done and if I see even a hint of yellow--), while Hikaru munched on a half-circle pastry filled with custard. They were just waiting there on the table under a glass cover, like Akari's mom knew he was coming over. The kitchen looked just like it used to: immaculate white counters, narrow metallic fridge, round wooden table with pine finish and four chairs - there was always at least one for a guest. The mandoline was shoved in the corner near the window. His mom had one just like it - they bought their appliances on the same day, at the same department store, when Hikaru and Akari were still spitting bubbles at each other from their strollers. A picture of them had been stuck to the front of his old refrigerator as long as Hikaru could remember.

Was it still there now?

Akari came down in slim white pants and a green t-shirt that didn't look like it should've taken half an hour to pick out, and strapped heeled sandals onto her feet by the door while he tied his sneakers and pulled his backpack over his shoulders again. The hydrangeas in their little front door garden were blooming blue and purple and pink like pom poms, and more cherry blossoms peeked over the wall. They littered the sidewalk all the way to the bus stop. Sai used to say their perfume was the essence of spring turning to summer, but all Hikaru could smell was Akari's apple spritzer and that curry lingering in the street. Omiya smelled like sandwich and coffee shops when they got off the bus, Akari yelling where they were going over the jarring groan and squeak of bus gears and cars, and they got a hot gust of exhaust in the face.

Akari blew her bangs from her face. "Junkudo Omiya Loft, eighth floor," she said again. "It's down this way." She grapped his arm. Hikaru jerked away, stopped himself just before saying sorry. She rolled her eyes and started walking.

He followed the flounce of her hair into the building, into an elevator that made too much noise, and let her pull him by the jacket onto the seventh floor. The cooking section is up--

...

From here, it went into Akari a) seeing a new mag out with her favorite BL manga/story and getting all excited, b) smacking Hikaru with the huge-ass collection because he's making fun of her, and then c) eventually getting to the part where she teaches him how to not burn water. He's supposed to prove he can make something other than instant ramen, and the idea was inspired by the long list of prospective cliches at the original sign-up post. Also, she finally figures out they're an item.

I was undecided on whether or not I'd include the Sai reveal, but the point in the original outline was that Hikaru stayed home on May 4/5 instead of going on his ritual trip to Innoshima-- as it's become in my head-canon. It seems to be a pretty common assumption in fandom.

I didn't finish because I thought it was lame and I was doing it wrong. Can't tell you if that's true or not, as I'm still having a lot of trouble writing. I was sick all of September though. It really cut down on my motivation.

As for finishing it later? I don't know. Probably not. It's a silly idea.

I was more fond of the other piece, but this one certainly isn't bad. Akari's a good character who just doesn't get enough love.
