Kagome was sorry to leave the treasury of artwork behind, though her shoulders had tensed painfully by the time they left the west wing. That was his mother's domain; she'd felt the female's aura lingering about the room, knotting her muscles in revenge for her continued presence. Sesshomaru had distracted her, actually conversing with her about the prints and their origin before he indicated they should leave.
She followed him back to the screens in front of the study and looked down at her hands, curling her fingers over the edge of the innermost sleeves. They hadn't encountered his mother, but her presence never really left.
"Are we causing you trouble?" she asked, averting her eyes to the wisteria. "Your mother. She..."
He said nothing, and the void was filled by the burble of water and the sigh of leaves.
"If we are," she continued, resisting the urge to cringe at his silence, "We can go back to Kaede. I'm sure we'd be safe enough there."
"That won't be necessary."
Her head whipped around. "But--"
"Do not mind her demands," he cut in as he turned back to his study, silks swirling in a blur of red butterflies. "I never do."
Kagome stared. He would dismiss his own mother so easily?
He sat behind his desk and beckoned, eyes once again taking on an unearthly glow when they reflected the sunlight in the shade of his room. "Come. I have more questions for you."
Kagome went.

Uhhh. You know, I've never been good at drabbles and shorts. XD;
I like creating a "canon" and sticking with it, so I'll probably use this one until it dies, and then beat it into the ground some more.
