"Remember," Kagome said, adjusting the lapels of his coat. "The Americans are here to make money. They're not bad, just... ambitious." And ruthless. And disrespectful.

Sesshomaru lifted a brow. "If you would like to handle this--"

"No." Kagome tugged hard at his cravat, as if that would silence him. She couldn't decide who would pitch a bigger fit if a woman tried to conduct business - their Japanese partners, or the stuffy Victorian New Yorkers. Heaven forbid a female involve herself in something outside the house, never mind the business was her idea to begin with.

Kagome tied his hair back with a satin ribbon. His mother had provided a spell to hide his markings. She pressed her palms to his cheeks, nudging stray strands behind his ears with her fingers, and brushed her thumbs over the illusion hiding his magenta stripes.

It was so unfair. Sesshomaru was the essence of Japan. He was here first.

This was her fault.

He tugged her hands down to his neck and leaned down to kiss her temple. "We have adapted to human customs before," he said. "There is no shame in doing so now."

Kagome nodded, smiling for his benefit, missing the sweep of his sleeves when he turned and left their chamber. The maples outside creaked, branches bare, and the wind brought the scent of snow through the screens.

She used to miss modern Japan. Now, once again, she longed for a return to the past.

.........................................

Inspired - somewhat - by Daughter of the Samurai. It's a memoir, and the first half or so is about the transition between the Tokugawa and Meiji eras for this samurai family. The author talked about business being difficult for the old families, etc. It grated against their ethics.
